Dr. Steven Casper has joined Active Chiropractic in Jasper, bringing eight years of private practice experience to the area.
Casper is a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington and completed his Doctorate of Chiropractic at Logan University. He is trained in several soft tissue techniques, including Graston and Active Release Technique (ART) and various exercise-based rehabilitative techniques. He also offers acupuncture and dry needling and incorporates these techniques into treatment plans when applicable.
“I like to blend these therapies with traditional chiropractic adjusting of the spine and extremities,” Casper explained. “And, I can tailor to the patient’s preference and tolerance.”
The Jasper-native’s encounter with healing through chiropractic medicine as a teenager set him on the course to pursue it as a career.
“Originally, I thought I would be a US History teacher and coach baseball like Coach (Terry) Gobert but switched to the health field in high school after Coach Ray Howard told me I had great form but couldn’t throw a baseball through a pane of glass,” Casper joked.
Around the same time, he happened to tweak his back while playing paintball in a cornfield behind his house. His mom took him to see Doctor Bernie Nonte, and the experience and healing Casper received intrigued him.
“I thought it was pretty awesome that he (Dr. Nonte) just needed a table, his hands, and a different perspective,” Casper said. “So I decided to pursue chiropractic at that point.”
His family has a history in medicine. Casper’s great-grandfather, John Casper, was an MD in Jasper for many years. Casper acknowledges his decision to become a chiropractor in light of this family connection to traditional medicine could have caused some head-scratching back in the day, but times have changed.
“The collaboration between traditional and alternative health care is improving and becoming more widespread,” he explained.
Dr. Casper has known Dr. Ross Hartings, owner of Active Chiropractic, since he was in seventh grade and had originally reached out to him in 2012 after graduating from Logan University. He could have joined the practice then, but Casper decided to pursue an internship for his master’s degree in rehabilitation at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
“That was a great experience but ultimately, we wanted to be a little closer to home,” he explained. “So we moved to Bloomington. I had two great mentors there in Drs. Brian Murer and Ryan Pribble. I’ve been in private practice for eight years up there.”
But now seemed like a good time to return home.
“My wife, Sarah, and I have three little kids,” Casper said, adding he didn’t know of a better place to raise them.
“It was a tough decision but like Yogi Berra would say, when I come to a fork in the road, I take it,” Casper said. “So somehow, in this crazy life, I am now getting a chance to see what is down the road not taken.”
Casper said he loves bringing his unique perspective to new patients to solve acute or chronic presentations.
“My favorite moment is to get the ball rolling on patients who have been to just about everyone, and I get the chance to be the difference,” he said.
Dr. Casper is taking appointments in Jasper now by phone at 812-482-4269 or on his website, CasperChiropractic.com.
Also, Active Chiropractic is moving to a new location as of April 11th. They will be at 209 3rd Avenue, Jasper, (former GAB building).
